Coping Skills

This week, I want us to think about coping skills. Copings skills are tools we use when we have a strong feeling such as angry, worried, or scared. Coping skills help keep our mind and body calm.

Here is a list of additional coping skills you could add to your toolbox! A coping skill might work 1 time and not the next. It is important to have a couple coping skills in your toolbox to help you handle a strong emotion.

Coping Skills Chart

  • Pick 3 strong emotions you feel the most and draw them on a piece of paper

  • Then pick 2-3 coping skills you could use for that strong emotion

*Remember a coping skill is what helps keep your mind and body calm when feeling a strong emotion.

See chart below for example!

Hang your chart where you can see it like the fridge. When you start to notice you are feeling a strong emotion: go to your chart, point to your emotion and pick a coping skill to try. Try the coping skill for 3-5 minutes. If that coping skill doesn't help keep your mind and body calm, go back to your chart and pick a different coping skill.

As you practice with your coping skills chart, you may find yourself adding new coping skills and taking off coping skills that are not helpful.
