Support System

What is a support system?

A support system is made up of individuals who provide care for us when we have strong feelings. These individuals could be family, friends, teachers, coaches, etc.

It is important for us to be aware of who is in our support system and how we can ask the individuals in our support system for help.

Asking for Help!

It is important to know everyone needs help and it is okay to ask for help.

Let's practice asking for help!

"I cannot open my snack, can you help me?"

"I do not feel well, can I go to the nurses?"

  • How have you seen your friends ask for help?

  • Did they throw items and yell?

  • Did they ask for help in a calm voice?

  • Which way of asking helped your friend get help?

  • Which way of asking would you be more likely to help them?

Pyramid of Support

Now that we understand how to ask for help, we need to identify who is in our support system. This activity will help us identify friends, family, and other adults who may be helpful to us.

  • Grab a piece of paper or construction paper

  • Draw a big triangle on your paper

  • Draw 2 horizontal lines

  • Draw staggered vertical lines to create blocks

  • Number the blocks-starting from the bottom working your way up

  • Fill in each block with the names of individuals you feel are a part of your support system

  • If you want, you can also write a description of how they can help you

  • Leave the last block for YOU! You are your biggest supporter!
